Are you a South Asian artist from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka and born in or after 1975?
You are invited to share examples of your work for the exhibition South Asia Artists: Imagining Our Future Together.

Imagining our Future Together is a juried group exhibition that will be on display in throughout South Asia and beyond.

GMR Art Contest – Calling young artists!

For the first time, the GMR team is organizing an art contest for young people on the theme of youth, skills and work – the focus of our forthcoming 2012 Education for All Global Monitoring Report. The winner’s work will be used in the report.

The contest is open to those aged 18 to 24, and the deadline is 1 April 2012. The first prize is a trip to Paris to participate in an event publicizing the artwork and meet with the GMR team. Full details are available on our web site.

Sri Lankan author Ashok Ferrey conducts creative writing workshop in Male’

Award winning Sri Lankan author Ashok Ferrey hosted a one-day creative writing workshop for 8 participants from Male last Saturday, 19 November 2011. The intensive workshop covered topics such as creative fiction and non-fiction, style, characterization, dialogue and short-story writing in addition to other aspects of writing and getting publishing.

Ashok Ferrey is Sri Lanka’s best selling author with three published novels. His book ‘Colpetty People’ was shortlisted for the prestigious Gratiaen Prize and remains the largest selling book of English fiction by a local writer living in Sri Lanka today.

The workshop was organized by ‘Open Mind Workshops’ (operating out of Lanka) together with the National Centre for the Arts (NCA) with support from Kaimoo Travels Pvt. Ltd.

Artist Talk by Yuan Xikun at the National Art Gallery

Chinese artist Yuan Xikun gave an artist talk at the National Art Gallery, on 17th October 2011. This event was organized by the Maldives’ Embassy in China and the Jin Tai Art Museum in Beijing in conjunction with the National Centre for the Arts. Along with a slide show presentation introducing the history behind Jin Tai Art Museum, Yuan Xikun’s 11 paintings, 6 posters and 2 sculptures were also displayed at the National Art Gallery.

Yuan Xikun is a prominent Chinese artist, environmentalist, curator, and the founder of the very first private museum in China. He was accompanied by Chinese Representative Zhang Zhenshan of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), Project Official Hu Shaofang from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and young soprano singer Liu Bing.

Dhivehi Fair – to celebrate the Tourism Week 2011

“Dhivehi Fair” a fair organized by the National Center for theArts, Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture, was held atJumhooree Maidhan last Saturday the 1st of October 2011, to mark the Tourism Week 2011. 15 Souvenir shops took part in this fair, showcasing their wide range of authenticMaldivian products.

The Fair commenced at 13.00hrs till 18.00hrs and the crowd was remarkably entertained by the bands of National Center for the Arts, Olympians and by Mandeera Boduberu Group.

The Fair was successfully concluded with highly favorable results.

MOU Signing 

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between National Centre for the Arts and China Literature and Arts foundation on 1st September 2011. The main purpose of this MOU is to strengthen the relations and promote the corporation in the fields of culture, arts and tourism. It encourages and support exchanges and cooperation in the fields of performing arts, cultural activities and tourism to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of the Republic of Maldives and the People’s Republic of China.

National Centre for the Arts has donated computers to Maldives Film Association with the aim of supporting the non profit organization working in the areas of arts and culture. These computers were donated to National Centre for the Arts from China literature and Arts Foundation.

Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Artist in Residance 2012

Open Call for residence programs for 2012! Artists and researchers/curators will be selected from 21 countries/region in Asia. The program will be placing even more importance on “exchange” with the museum visitors and local community through a creative channel of art.
